¹ Then Solomon said, "The LORD has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;

² I have built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever."

³ While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them.

⁴ Then he said: "Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who with his hands has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to my father David. For he said,

⁵ 'Since the day I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built for my Name to be there, nor have I chosen anyone to be the leader over my people Israel.

⁶ But now I have chosen Jerusalem for my Name to be there, and I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.'

⁷ "My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

⁸ But the LORD said to my father David, 'Because it was in your heart to build a temple for my Name, you did well to have this in your heart.

⁹ Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, who is your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.'

¹⁰ "The LORD has kept the promise he made. I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the LORD promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

¹¹ There I have placed the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD that he made with the people of Israel."

¹² Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands.

¹³ Now he had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, five cubits wide and three cubits high, and had placed it in the center of the outer court. He stood on the platform and then knelt down before the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven.

¹⁴ He said: "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.

¹⁵ You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today.

 ¹⁶ "Now LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, 'You shall never fail to have a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons are careful in all they do to walk before me according to my law, as you have done.'

¹⁷ And now, O LORD, God of Israel, let your word that you promised your servant David come true.

¹⁸ "But will God really dwell on earth with men? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!

¹⁹ Yet give attention to your servant's prayer and his plea for mercy, O LORD my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence.

²⁰ May your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, this place of which you said you would put your Name there. May you hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place.

²¹ Hear the supplications of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.

 ²² "When a man wrongs his neighbor and is required to take an oath and he comes and swears the oath before your altar in this temple,

²³ then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, repaying the guilty by bringing down on his own head what he has done. Declare the innocent not guilty and so establish his innocence.

 ²⁴ "When your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you and when they turn back and confess your name, praying and making supplication before you in this temple,

²⁵ then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to them and their fathers.

 ²⁶ "When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray toward this place and confess your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them,

²⁷ then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.

 ²⁸ "When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when enemies besiege them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come,

²⁹ and when a prayer or plea is made by any of your people Israel—each one aware of his afflictions and pains, and spreading out his hands toward this temple-

³⁰ then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive, and deal with each man according to all he does, since you know his heart (for you alone know the hearts of men),

³¹ so that they will fear you and walk in your ways all the time they live in the land you gave our fathers.

³² "As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,

³³ then hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.

 ³⁴ "When your people go to war against their enemies, wherever you send them, and when they pray to you toward this city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, ³⁵ then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.

 ³⁶ "When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive to a land far away or near; ³⁷ and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, 'We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly'; ³⁸ and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their captivity where they were taken, and pray toward the land you gave their fathers, toward the city you have chosen and toward the temple I have built for your Name; ³⁹ then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive your people, who have sinned against you.

 ⁴⁰ "Now, my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.

 ⁴¹ "Now arise, O LORD God, and come to your resting place,
       you and the ark of your might.
       May your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation,
       may your saints rejoice in your goodness.

 ⁴² O LORD God, do not reject your anointed one.
       Remember the great love promised to David your servant."

 

 ¹ Entonces Salomón declaró: «Señor, tú has dicho que habitarías en la oscuridad de una nube,

² y yo te he construido un excelso templo, un lugar donde habites para siempre.»

³ Luego se puso de frente para bendecir a toda la asamblea de Israel que estaba allí de pie,

⁴ y dijo: «Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que con su mano ha cumplido ahora lo que con su boca le había prometido a mi padre David cuando le dijo:

⁵ "Desde el día en que saqué de la tierra de Egipto a mi pueblo, no elegí a ninguna ciudad de las tribus de Israel para que en ella se me construyera un templo donde yo habitara, ni elegí a nadie para que gobernara a mi pueblo Israel.

⁶ Más bien, elegí a Jerusalén para habitar en ella, y a David para que gobernara a mi pueblo Israel."
⁷ »Pues bien, mi padre David tuvo mucho interés en construir un templo en honor del Señor, Dios de Israel,

⁸ pero el Señor le dijo: "Me agrada que te hayas interesado en construir un templo en mi honor.

⁹ Sin embargo, no serás tú quien me lo construya, sino un hijo de tus entrañas; él será quien construya el templo en mi honor."
¹⁰ »Ahora el Señor ha cumplido su promesa: Tal como lo prometió, he sucedido a mi padre David en el trono de Israel, y he construido el templo en honor del Señor, Dios de Israel.

¹¹ Allí he colocado el arca, en la cual está el pacto que el Señor hizo con los israelitas.»

¹² A continuación, Salomón se puso ante el altar del Señor y, en presencia de toda la asamblea de Israel, extendió las manos.

¹³ Había mandado construir y colocar en medio del atrio una plataforma de bronce cuadrada, que medía dos metros con veinticinco centímetros por lado, y un metro con treinta y cinco centímetros de alto. Allí, sobre la plataforma, se arrodilló y, extendiendo las manos al cielo,

¹⁴ oró así: «Señor, Dios de Israel, no hay Dios como tú en el cielo ni en la tierra, pues tú cumples tu *pacto de amor con quienes te sirven y te siguen de todo *corazón.

¹⁵ Has llevado a cabo lo que le dijiste a tu siervo David, mi padre; y este día has cumplido con tu mano lo que con tu boca prometiste.
¹⁶ »Y ahora, Señor, Dios de Israel, cumple también la promesa que le hiciste a tu siervo, mi padre David, cuando le dijiste: "Si tus hijos observan una buena conducta, viviendo de acuerdo con mi *ley como tú lo has hecho, nunca te faltará un descendiente que ocupe el trono de Israel en mi presencia."

¹⁷ Señor, Dios de Israel, ¡confirma ahora esta promesa que le hiciste a tu siervo David!
¹⁸ »Pero ¿será posible que tú, Dios mío, habites en la tierra con la *humanidad? Si los cielos, por altos que sean, no pueden contenerte, ¡mucho menos este templo que he construido!

¹⁹ Sin embargo, Señor mi Dios, atiende a la oración y a la súplica de este siervo tuyo. Oye el clamor y la oración que elevo en tu presencia.

²⁰ ¡Que tus ojos estén abiertos día y noche sobre este templo, el lugar donde decidiste habitar, para que oigas la oración que tu siervo te eleva aquí!

²¹ Oye las súplicas de tu siervo y de tu pueblo Israel cuando oren en este lugar. Oye desde el cielo, donde habitas; ¡escucha y perdona!
²² »Si alguien peca contra su prójimo y se le exige venir a este templo para jurar delante de tu altar,

²³ óyelo tú desde el cielo y juzga a tus siervos. Condena al culpable, y haz que reciba su merecido; absuelve al inocente, y vindícalo por su rectitud.
²⁴ »Si tu pueblo Israel es derrotado por el enemigo por haber pecado contra ti, y luego se vuelve a ti para honrar tu *nombre, y ora y te suplica en este templo,

²⁵ óyelo tú desde el cielo, y perdona su pecado y hazlo regresar a la tierra que les diste a ellos y a sus antepasados.
²⁶ »Cuando tu pueblo peque contra ti y tú lo aflijas cerrando el cielo para que no llueva, si luego ellos oran en este lugar y honran tu nombre y se *arrepienten de su pecado,

²⁷ óyelos tú desde el cielo y perdona el pecado de tus siervos, de tu pueblo Israel. Guíalos para que sigan el buen *camino, y envía la lluvia sobre esta tierra, que es tuya, pues tú se la diste a tu pueblo por herencia.
²⁸ »Cuando en el país haya hambre, peste, sequía, o plagas de langostas o saltamontes en los sembrados, o cuando el enemigo sitie alguna de nuestras ciudades; en fin, cuando venga cualquier calamidad o enfermedad,

²⁹ si luego en su dolor cada israelita, consciente de su culpa extiende sus manos hacia este templo, y ora y te suplica,

³⁰ óyelo tú desde el cielo, donde habitas, y perdónalo. Págale a cada uno según su conducta, la cual tú conoces, puesto que sólo tú escudriñas el corazón humano.

³¹ Así todos tendrán temor de ti y andarán en tus caminos mientras vivan en la tierra que les diste a nuestros antepasados.
³² »Trata de igual manera al extranjero que no pertenece a tu pueblo Israel, pero que atraído por tu gran fama y por tus despliegues de fuerza y poder ha venido de lejanas tierras. Cuando ese extranjero venga y ore en este templo,

³³ óyelo tú desde el cielo, donde habitas, y concédele cualquier petición que te haga. Así todos los pueblos de la tierra conocerán tu nombre y, al igual que tu pueblo Israel, tendrán temor de ti y comprenderán que en este templo que he construido se invoca tu nombre.
³⁴ »Cuando saques a tu pueblo para combatir a sus enemigos, sea donde sea, si el pueblo ora a ti y dirige la mirada hacia esta ciudad que has escogido, hacia el templo que he construido en tu honor,

³⁵ oye tú desde el cielo su oración y su súplica, y defiende su causa.
³⁶ »Ya que no hay ser humano que no peque, si tu pueblo peca contra ti y tú te enojas con ellos y los entregas al enemigo para que se los lleven cautivos a otro país, lejano o cercano,

³⁷ si en el destierro, en el país de los vencedores, se arrepienten y se vuelven a ti, y oran a ti diciendo: "Somos culpables, hemos pecado, hemos hecho lo malo" ;

³⁸ y en la tierra de sus captores se vuelven a ti de todo corazón y con toda el *alma, y oran y dirigen la mirada hacia la tierra que les diste a sus antepasados, hacia la ciudad que has escogido y hacia el templo que he construido en tu honor,

³⁹ oye tú sus oraciones y súplicas desde el cielo, donde habitas, y defiende su causa. ¡Perdona a tu pueblo que ha pecado contra ti!
⁴⁰ »Ahora, Dios mío, te ruego que tus ojos se mantengan abiertos, y atentos tus oídos a las oraciones que se eleven en este lugar.

⁴¹ »Levántate, Señor y Dios;
      ven a descansar,
      tú y tu arca poderosa.
   Señor y Dios,
      ¡que tus sacerdotes se revistan de *salvación!
      ¡Que tus fieles se regocijen en tu bondad!

⁴² Señor y Dios,
      no le des la espalda a tu *ungido.
      ¡Recuerda tu fiel amor hacia David, tu siervo!»

 ¹ When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.

² The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled it.

³ When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying,
       "He is good;
       his love endures forever."

⁴ Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD.

⁵ And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the people dedicated the temple of God.

⁶ The priests took their positions, as did the Levites with the LORD's musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the LORD and which were used when he gave thanks, saying, "His love endures forever." Opposite the Levites, the priests blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.

 ⁷ Solomon consecrated the middle part of the courtyard in front of the temple of the LORD, and there he offered burnt offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar he had made could not hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings and the fat portions.

⁸ So Solomon observed the festival at that time for seven days, and all Israel with him—a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath to the Wadi of Egypt.

⁹ On the eighth day they held an assembly, for they had celebrated the dedication of the altar for seven days and the festival for seven days more.

¹⁰ On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their homes, joyful and glad in heart for the good things the LORD had done for David and Solomon and for his people Israel.

 ¹¹ When Solomon had finished the temple of the LORD and the royal palace, and had succeeded in carrying out all he had in mind to do in the temple of the LORD and in his own palace,

¹² the LORD appeared to him at night and said: "I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.

¹³ "When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people,

¹⁵ Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.

¹⁶ I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. ¹⁷ "As for you, if you walk before me as David your father did, and do all I command, and observe my decrees and laws,

¹⁸ I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father when I said, 'You shall never fail to have a man to rule over Israel.'

¹⁹ "But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,

²⁰ then I will uproot Israel from my land, which I have given them, and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. I will make it a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.

²¹ And though this temple is now so imposing, all who pass by will be appalled and say, 'Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?'

²² People will answer, 'Because they have forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why he brought all this disaster on them.' "

¹ Cuando Salomón terminó de orar, descendió fuego del cielo y consumió el *holocausto y los sacrificios, y la gloria del Señor llenó el templo.

² Tan lleno de su gloria estaba el templo, que los sacerdotes no podían entrar en él.

³ Al ver los israelitas que el fuego descendía y que la gloria del Señor se posaba sobre el templo, cayeron de rodillas y, postrándose rostro en tierra, alabaron al Señor diciendo: «El Señor es bueno; su gran amor perdura para siempre.»
⁴ Entonces el rey y todo el pueblo ofrecieron sacrificios en presencia del Señor.

⁵ El rey Salomón ofreció veintidós mil bueyes y ciento veinte mil ovejas. Así fue como el rey y todo el pueblo dedicaron el templo de Dios.
⁶ Los sacerdotes estaban de pie en sus puestos. Los levitas tocaban los instrumentos musicales que el rey David había hecho para alabar al Señor, y con los cuales cantaba: «Su gran amor perdura para siempre.» Los sacerdotes tocaban las trompetas frente a los levitas, y todo Israel permanecía de pie.
⁷ Salomón también consagró la parte central del atrio, que está frente al templo del Señor, y allí presentó los holocaustos y la grasa de los sacrificios de *comunión, ya que en el altar de bronce que hizo Salomón no había espacio para los holocaustos, la grasa y las ofrendas de cereales.
⁸ En aquella ocasión Salomón y todo Israel celebraron la fiesta durante siete días. Era una inmensa asamblea que había acudido de todo lugar, desde Lebó Jamat hasta el río de Egipto.

⁹ Al octavo día tuvieron una asamblea solemne, porque habían celebrado la consagración del altar durante siete días, y la fiesta durante siete días más.

¹⁰ El día veintitrés del mes séptimo, Salomón envió al pueblo a sus casas, y ellos regresaron contentos y llenos de alegría por el bien que el Señor había hecho en favor de David, de Salomón y de su pueblo Israel.

¹¹ Cuando Salomón terminó el templo del Señor y el palacio real, llevando a feliz término todo lo que se había propuesto hacer en ellos,

¹² el Señor se le apareció una noche y le dijo: «He escuchado tu oración, y he escogido este templo para que en él se me ofrezcan sacrificios.

¹³ Cuando yo cierre los cielos para que no llueva, o le ordene a la langosta que devore la tierra, o envíe pestes sobre mi pueblo,

¹⁵ Mantendré abiertos mis ojos, y atentos mis oídos a las oraciones que se eleven en este lugar.

¹⁶ Desde ahora y para siempre escojo y consagro este templo para habitar en él. Mis ojos y mi *corazón siempre estarán allí.
¹⁷ »En cuanto a ti, si me sigues como lo hizo tu padre David, y me obedeces en todo lo que yo te ordene y cumples mis decretos y *leyes,

¹⁸ yo afirmaré tu trono real, como pacté con tu padre David cuando le dije: "Nunca te faltará un descendiente en el trono de Israel."
¹⁹ »Pero si ustedes me abandonan, y desobedecen los decretos y mandamientos que les he dado, y se apartan de mí para servir y adorar a otros dioses,

²⁰ los desarraigaré de la tierra que les he dado y repudiaré este templo que he consagrado en mi honor. Entonces los convertiré en el hazmerreír de todos los pueblos.

²¹ Y aunque ahora este templo es imponente, llegará el día en que todo el que pase frente a él quedará asombrado y preguntará: "¿Por qué el Señor ha tratado así a este país y a este templo?"

²² Y le responderán: "Porque abandonaron al Señor, Dios de sus antepasados, que los sacó de Egipto, y se echaron en los brazos de otros dioses, a los cuales adoraron y sirvieron. Por eso el Señor ha dejado que les sobrevenga tanto desastre." »
