Feature article: THE SENTINEL

The Sentinel

By Dolores Milazzo-Hicks

Sentinel  sentinel, noun, verb, -neled, -neling
    1. a person stationed to keep watch and guard against surprises; sentry.
    2. (Figurative.) a person or thing that watches, or stands as if watching.

It was a sunny crisp day in May that began with the sound of a car horn beckoning me to hurry for our short trip to our post at a local abortion center. It had been a while since I had taken up this simple act of prayer on behalf of the children who would be aborted that morning. We pray for the mothers that suffer not only from the loss of their child today, but often for the rest of their lives.
Upon our arrival we could hear loud music blasting from the center. This noise was an attempt to prevent us from sharing information with the people entering the center. As women would come and go, their demeanor was downcast and hesitant some hiding their faces with apparel, but encouraged by their partners they would reluctantly proceed. Upon leaving the center after the abortion they appear stunned, some cry, some physically hurting and with others the reality of what has happened reveals unbelief.
I joined with others in prayer. I was aware of the spiritual battle-taking place between the forces of life and death. Innocent babies being slaughtered – it was too much for my mind to comprehend – so I looked up into the trees and to the blue sky as sunlight pouring through the leaves illuminated those who stood quietly in prayer with more fervor for an end to abortion.
Many brave souls are daily keeping watch.  They, the sentinels, see, they understand the enormity of the battle being waged on behalf of the kingdom, and the words from Ephesians come   “… we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
I am sure that God sees to it that there is a witness to the fact that each person killed at the abortion center is noted and they do not die alone, unloved or unwanted by Him or His people.
One could say that the sentinel of today stand their watch, cry out to God, as in the days of old, against the enemies of life. The sentinel of today is never limited by space or time.  Whether in a prayer closet, on the streets, in congress or church they keep watch, guarding against the surprise attacks of evil.
Upon leaving the center the music continued it’s blaring decibels, the out-of-town abortionist had fled, we walked away giving thanks to God for each one of you who can see, can hear and understand the voice of God and obey the Master’s call.
